There are schools in Russia that use non-standard approaches to education: some have abandoned the traditional grading scale, while others allow children to move freely around the classroom during lessons. In this article, we will talk about the two most common types of alternative schools in our country - Montessori schools and Waldorf schools.

According to the Interregional Montessori Association , this method is used by almost 120 kindergartens in 60 cities of the country. There are also quite a few schools - about 70 educational institutions.

There is also an Association of Waldorf Schools in Russia , which includes 16 schools working according to the Steiner system.

Montessori system
The Montessori method itself came to us from Italy. Doctor and teacher Maria Montessori opened her first school in 1907, which she called "The House of Children". In teaching according to the Montessori method, the principle is used - "help me do it myself". That is, the adult acts only as an assistant, stimulating the interests of the child.

"In this case, we are talking about a radical shift in the center of activity, which previously undoubtedly fell on the teacher, but within the framework of our method, on the contrary, is primarily gambling data philippine with the child. Educational work is distributed between the mentor and the environment. In place of the former "lesson-giving" teacher, a much more complex whole has come, that is, in addition to the teacher, a number of objects (developmental material) have appeared, which together with her educate the child." M. Montessori, "The Discovery of the Child"
What is the essence of the method?
Maria Montessori was the first to apply the principle of scientific observation of children in pedagogy. It all started with her identifying periods in a child's development that she called sensitive. These are time intervals when children learn certain skills especially well. Montessori borrowed the term from biologist Hugo de Vries, who described the process of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.
