Online sales up 15% to €15.4 billion. German consumers spent more money online in the first half of 2009 than ever before, according to figures from the German Association for Distance Selling (Bunderverband des Deutschen Versandhandels – BVH).

Online stores have increased their bc data america turnover by 2%, reaching 29.1 billion euros. But it is not the only form of distance selling that is improving its performance. In 80% of telephone or mail orders, the medium consulted to place the order was the printed catalogue. In fact, 69% of online buyers consult the catalogue first. For this reason, the association believes that the time when the catalogue can be questioned as an advertising medium is still far away.

The average German spent 354 euros on distance and online sales. through these channels are clothing, textiles and shoes, although demand for these products has dropped by 4% compared to 2008 and has remained at 38% so far in 2009. On the other hand, orders for books, CDs and DVDs have increased from 18% to 21%.

These results are the first part of the consumer study Distanzhandel in Deutschland 2009 (Distance Selling in Germany 2009), conducted by TNS Infratest on behalf of BVH.
