Energy efficiency, a source of competitiveness for companies

Energy efficiency has now emerged as an essential issue in order to achieve the European Commission's Horizon 2020 and 2030 objectives on energy and climate change.

However, their interest does not lie solely in achieving the institutional goals set, aimed at sustainable growth, environmental preservation and climate change mitigation. Their importance goes beyond that. Improving the energy efficiency of companies implies reducing costs, increasing competitiveness, improving profit margins and, from a more general point of view, it means reducing the energy dependence of the economy and improving the aggregate balance of payments.
In order to promote energy efficiency among companies, Chambers of Commerce from 10 European countries implemented the STEEEP project (Support and Training for an Excellent Energy Efficiency Performance) during the period between March 2014 and February 2017. This is a project co-financed by the Intelligent Energy for Europe Programme of the European Commission, and its objective has been to advise 600 European SMEs on energy efficiency, of which 108 were Spanish.
To this end, within the framework of the project, an analysis mexico phone lookup the energy situation of each participating SME was carried out and an individual energy plan was drawn up, which included energy efficiency measures adapted to the needs of each of them. In addition, this advisory work was complemented by the organisation of workshops with a variety of topics, always related to energy consumption in the company, which was useful for informing and raising awareness among SMEs about the usefulness of controlling their energy consumption as well as the benefits associated with greater energy efficiency.
In total, 1,400 measures were proposed within the STEEEP framework to improve energy efficiency in the 108 participating Spanish SMEs. If fully implemented, these would reduce CO2 emissions by more than 2,000 tonnes. Furthermore, from a cost perspective, the potential savings associated with these 1,400 measures could reach 9.5 million kWh, reducing the overall energy bill of the 108 companies by around 870,000 euros.
In other words, increasing energy efficiency would not only help achieve the 2020 targets by reducing polluting emissions, but would also directly affect the results of companies and their competitiveness by reducing costs.
The real impact analysis of the project confirms this. It is estimated that after the delivery of the individualised energy plan to the participating SMEs, throughout 2015 and during the first half of 2016, they stopped consuming around 4.8 million kWh, 7.1% of their total consumption, saving more than 441,000 euros (6% of their energy expenditure in 2014). In addition, during this period, 1,100 tonnes of CO2 were stopped from being emitted into the atmosphere (8.2% of the emissions released into the atmosphere by these companies in 2014).
