Many who have online businesses , but also do business over the internet, in at least some aspect, gathered for the 9th time at the DIDS conference . This event marks the Internet Domain Day of Serbia every year , and 2018 also marked an anniversary: 10 years of the existence of .rs domains on the internet. We visited this conference and bring you the most important details.
DIDS
The conference was held on March 6, 2018 at the Metropol Palace Hotel in Belgrade and was divided into 3 thematic sections:
cyber personality
digital heritage and
online business.
Each part began with an introductory lecture, followed by whatsapp number panel discussions, which discussed current topics with examples from the region.
Cyber personality
The first block was dedicated to the story of protection against misuse of personal data that we leave on the internet, with a special emphasis on GDPR – General Data Protection Regulation . This is a special EU regulation that applies to the use of personal data in online transactions with EU residents, and which will become mandatory from May 25, 2018 .
The regulation will have to be respected by all those doing business online in the EU, even if they are not registered as business entities in that territory. This includes companies that outsource work for EU clients, as well as those that are registered outside the EU but target citizens from this area in their advertising.
The conclusion of this panel discussion was that with the introduction of this regulation, the business of Facebook and Google will change forever, and that data is more valuable than the product that someone can offer.
Digital heritage
How is the cultural heritage of a people preserved ? What is the role of digitalization in this? How has digitalization been applied in the field of culture and education in Slovenia ? The answers to these questions were given by the panel participants of the second block of lectures.
Although digitization in these areas most often refers to scanning data and entering it into a database, it is a much broader concept. The goal of digitization is to preserve heritage at the national level in a digital form that will be accessible to everyone. Experts predict that in the future, this data will be accessible through devices that exist today, as well as through some that have yet to be created. The possibilities are limitless.
The lecturer from Slovenia provided more information about the use of cloud technology and its role in digitalization. There was also a debate about the efficiency of the "supreme" cloud system that exists in this country, as well as its cost-effectiveness , since it is in public-private ownership .
The conclusion of the panel on the use of digitalization in science and culture is that a country does not need massive machines and the latest technology to develop science, but rather other methods are now in focus.

Online business
For many, the most interesting block of lectures included some good examples from practice : businesses that successfully operate online , and on the national domain .rs. There were representatives of various industries - from horticulture , through tourism, to manufacturers of educational toys for children. Although different, all of these companies were united in their view that expanding their presence on the Internet brought them a significant increase in the volume of their business.
The key question was whether companies need a website. One of the panelists also presented statistical results showing that after redesigning their website, the number of clients increased by 1,000%!
The advantages of registering a national domain were also discussed , one of which is that websites on a national domain have better local support, i.e. better search results at the national level. The results of a survey (Mineco Computers) were also presented, which show that as many as 79% of companies in Serbia that have a registered domain have a .rs domain, but also that users prefer a national domain.
As a conclusion of the block, the opinion was that companies that do not have a registered domain and do not have their own website are missing out on a large number of business opportunities and are not reaching a good portion of potential clients.
