Why do people turn off automatic updates?

Post by Rakhiraqsdiwseo »

It turns out there are a whole bunch of reasons (mostly unjustified) why people turn off automatic updates on Windows PCs and Macs .

I recently wrote a post urging people to stop disabling automatic updates, and I got a lot of feedback from people explaining why they still chose to do so. It turns out that people have a number of strong opinions about updates, and in most cases the reason for not updating or postponing updates is due to poor computer habits.

Here is a selection of the responses I received and a number of comments from me personally.

"Updates always come at the wrong time!" I understand, although Windows 10 does have tools that allow you to control when updates are installed.

"I'm constantly being pestered to install Windows 10, and I sri lanka whatsapp data want that." It's clear that Microsoft is proud of Windows 10 and would like as many people as possible to install it, but the way the company has used the Windows Update mechanism to pester end users has resulted in significant reputational damage, leading to a serious mistrust of automatic updates themselves.

"Updates take forever." I don't disagree. The massive updates that come to iOS or macOS can be considered a stress test for your internet connection, and the same goes for Windows if you haven't updated in a few months. But sometimes there are annoyances that you have to endure.

"Updates change too much in the system." This is why I hate it when security updates come bundled with feature updates. For example, with iOS, the only way to get updates is to install the full package with new features and everything. Yes, it's annoying, but you have to accept things as they are.
