The software for organizing SDN can run on any serial computer, easily ensures the transition from manual management of individual network equipment to network management as a whole, and also forms a software-controlled interface between the network application and the network transport environment. In some cases, it is permissible to use classic switches and routers with software overlays that allow the control software to abstract the data flow from the architectural features of a particular proprietary hardware. SDN consists of three basic planes: data, control, and applications, with the control plane logically centralized and separated from the data plane.
