Elliot Katz, founder of Phantom Auto and a former attorney who has advised many major companies on drone development, believes that modern autonomous cars can be used in a number of situations, but they still need to be controlled by a human. Phantom Auto provides software for remote assistance and control of autonomous vehicles.
Like Waymo, Aurora is currently developing autonomous trucks as well as passenger cars. No company has yet launched a driverless truck. But Urmson and other experts believe that this type of autonomous vehicle will come to market sooner than those designed to transport ordinary consumers.
Long-haul routes are much simpler. According to Urmson, once you iran number data master one section of the route, it will be easier to master the next. But even a trip along a long and relatively straight highway is an extremely difficult task. It will be even more difficult to organize the delivery of lunches, even in a small area.
Dave Ferguson, also one of the first engineers on Google’s team and president of food and other goods delivery company Nuro, calls it one of the “biggest technical challenges of our generation.” Many expected self-driving technology to improve as internet services and smartphone apps did. But robotics is a much more complex science. Ferguson believes that in an industry like this, you have to be “a little crazy and a little optimistic.”
“This optimism is necessary to get up every day and diligently try to solve a problem that has no solution and may never have one,” Ferguson argues.
Uber and Lyft are not giving up on drones completely, however, and plan to work with companies that are still working on the technology. Lyft says autonomous rides could be available by 2023. CEO Jody Kelman says the service will be rolled out with caution: driverless cars will travel at low speeds on a limited number of streets and only in certain weather conditions.
Industry players remain optimisti
