Multicloud primarily refers to the use of multiple public cloud service providers for virtual data storage or computing resources, in addition to other private and local cloud infrastructures. The multi-cloud capability not only allows for more flexibility in the use of cloud services, opening the door to hybrid cloud solution options, but also eliminates dependence on a single provider.

Cloud service providers host three types of services: IaaS, SaaS, and PaaS. With IaaS, the cloud provider hosts servers, storage, and networking hardware while also offering services such as security, backup, and load balancing. PaaS extends its IaaS offering to include operating systems and middleware, while SaaS understands applications so nothing is hosted on a customer's site. Cloud providers can also offer these services standalone.

the possibilities are endless. An enterprise's multi-cloud may include using multiple IaaS providers for different applications and public PaaS to try out new cloud programs. Every enterprise's multi-cloud infrastructure will be different depending on its needs and constraints.
