How does anonymization work?

Post by sujonkumar6300 »

We closed the previous column by mentioning the arrest of Dmitry Bogatov, a young mathematics teacher and free software developer in Russia, for charges related to the operation of a Tor exit node, an activity that, per se, is not illegal in Russia. Bogatov spent ten months in custody. On January 31, he was again partially released (with restrictions on movement outside his region). Unfortunately, this does not mean that the Russian judicial system understood the nature of the Tor network. Less than two weeks later, another Tor exit node operator, Dmitry Klepikov, was arrested. The media mobilization and international pressure achieved after Bogatov's case fortunately led to Klepikov being released 48 hours later.

The third point to recapitulate is probably of much less importance in the grand scheme of things, but I cannot overlook it: I mentioned that I was beginning preparations for a project that would lead me to delve switzerland consumer email list deeper into privacy and anonymity. I am very pleased to report that, indeed, DGAPA-UNAM accepted my project PE102718, with which I commit myself to develop for two years the topics that I am beginning to scratch out in this column.

The basic principle under which Tor, the main anonymization network on the Internet, operates is simple; it was introduced as early as 1981 by David Chaum, and while Tor is the most important, there are several other networks built on this same foundation.
