Let's get down to business: Twenty years ago

But I am digressing into a topic that could be discussed much more, and which I really enjoy reminiscing about and writing about. For those interested in this topic, I can recommend the book published last year by the University of the Claustro de Sor Juana, «Hacker Ethics, Security and Surveillance» [2], in which I had the honor of participating with a chapter.

What we knew about this was mere assumptions. Of course, international telecommunications were at a level unmatched by what they are now; international phone calls were extremely expensive, and digital communications were available to a laughable percentage of the population. If we spent our actual working time, or space in a magazine like Software Guru, talking about albania consumer email list widespread surveillance back then… we would undoubtedly be labeled "conspiracy theorists."

This topic is not entirely new to our magazine: I already wrote about it in this same column in issues 32 (May 2011) and 42 (November 2013).

Since the first revelations of Wikileaks, a very important part of the high-level leaks that have been presented are related to the depth of the espionage that is carried out indiscriminately. On the one hand, we see agreements between security agencies of different governments and sets of backdoors in widely used software that are kept secretly hidden by them for years, and on the other, the proliferation of in-depth analytical techniques, supported by the indefinable Big Data, in the hands of private individuals.
