The latest global Digital Society Index survey conducted by Dentsu Aegis Network shows that Generation Z is reducing the amount of their online activity. A fifth of 18- to 24-year-olds have deactivated their social media accounts, while a third are limiting their smartphone use during the day.
The study is part of a global survey conducted during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, which examined GenZers' relationships with technology and brands.
The analysis reveals that, despite the lockdown leading buy bulk sms service to increased online activity, a fifth of GenZers have deactivated their social media accounts in the last 12 months . This trend is particularly evident across Europe, from north to south. Italy also has an above-average figure: 25% of users between the ages of 18 and 24 have deactivated a social media profile.
Globally, a third have limited their time spent online or on their smartphone. Nearly half have taken steps to reduce the amount of data they share online , such as deleting their search history or opting out of location services.
These measures indicate a strong awareness among GenZers of how and to what extent their data can be used and of some of the perceived negative impacts of technology on society. Indeed, more than half of them distrust technology companies due to concerns about how their data will be used. Italians are 68% likely to abandon a company that misuses or loses their data.
But despite these concerns, the study shows that GenZers are confident that technology will have more positive than negative effects in the future. Two-thirds are optimistic that digital technologies will help solve the world's most pressing challenges, and this sentiment is strongest in Hong Kong, followed by countries such as Poland, Finland, and Mexico.
